Live Fish Food versus Non Live Fish Food

Benefits of live fish food Copepods, Amphipods and Mysid versus non live fish food.

We feed non live foods sparingly to our reef tanks to prevent water quality deterioration by over feeding. The current standard is to feed once or twice a day as little as possible.

Most reef fish are physiologically evolved to eat or forage constantly throughout the day.

This means that fish are not developing their nutritional health potential when we feed them one large meal per day no matter how nutritious the diet is.

This is difficult to achieve with non-live fish food since the excess fish food that is not eaten right away starts to break down immediately into toxic byproducts like Nitrates, Phosphates, ammonia etc. and causes water quality issues.

Our answer to this problem is to introduce Amphipods and Copepods so far has been to set up our aquarium systems with items such as protein skimmers and filter, sumps, constant water changes, and all sorts of chemicals to try to maintain water quality and a balanced healthy aquarium system.

Live prey items such as Copepods, Amphipods, and Mysid shrimp is the solution to these problems. Copepods stay alive in the reef tank until eaten, they filter feed from the water and reproduce in the tank. Some types of pods eat nuisance algae.

We call this new way of running the saltwater aquarium, Whole Life Cycle Aquarium.
